Top Storage Width

Chris -

Another qtn.....

I am enclosing a copy of the 02C.dbk file that you left with us after the training. This file has the data for the Sunny Day Breach Analysis. In the Cross Section Geometry it also contains values for the parameter of Storage Top Width. How vital is this data to the running of a breach analysis? How do I calculate this based on the cross-sections we have from River-CAD? Am I looking for areas that have the potential for storage?

How was the Storage Top Width for the file 02C.dbk calculated? I have entered a few more XS and I am getting an error message at about the 1.46 hr and that computations have been halted, could it be that the XS that I have entered do not have a Storage Top Width applied or specified?

Thanks again

Stephen

Re: Top Storage Width

Dear Stephen :

In your particular model the channel is extremely steep. As such, you are dealing with very high velocities as the water leaves the reservoir structure and travels down the river. In these situations, it is often necessary to "smooth" the channel geometry so that the flow can transition as it expands and contracts. If the flow attempts to expand or contract too rapidly, the model can sometimes have difficulty in converging.

BTW, I am in Albuquerque teaching at URS :).
