Conservation of Mass

In the output just prior to the Flood Crest Summary there is a "Conservation of Mass Results", is there a explanation on how this value is calculated?

Re: Conservation of Mass

Dear Joe Kissel :

It does a mass balance and determines how much water got "mis-placed" due to non-convergence problems, etc.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.

Re: Conservation of Mass

Chris I understand that a negative value denotes flow volume lost, positive value indicates flow volume gained, does any of the user manuals discuss this calculation? Does this calculation include the inflows into the dam and all lateral inflows ?
What constitutes a "bad" value? Does a 1% loss or gain mean your results are not acceptable? I would think it would be dependent on the total volume in the system. Does D.L. Fread cover this topic in any of his papers? Did Fread discuss
what Value of loss/gain is acceptable?

RE: Conservation of Mass

Dear Joe Kissel :

There is really nothing written about it that I have found. These are all good questions of which I have also asked the NWS. Perhaps you will have better luck.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.
