Hydrogen Sulfide Prediction

SWMMrs,

Is there an available software package that is used in conjunction with a hydraulic model to predict the location and severity of hydrogen sulfide release?

Thanks,

Re: Hydrogen Sulfide Prediction

ASCE Manual of Practice No. 69 provides the code for a program called SULFBAS that produces hydrogen sulfide generation rates for pipe reaches. A key input is flow, since the program is based on the Pomeroy-Parkhurst equation which uses hydraulic radius, wetted perimeter, non-wetted perimeter, and other parameters linked to how much depth of flow is in the pipe and the velocity of the flow. Sensitivity analysis is advised.

My company developed a database driven program that determined the sulfide generation in a whole system of pipes using the concepts of MOP 69. The program and implementation was detailed at a WEF conference in the mid-90s. The database was populated with flows from a hydraulic model.

Hydrogen sulfide release is a little trickier, as it deals with turbulence, drops, and high velocities -- very site specific things. A program called CORAL, Collection system Organic Release ALgorithm, by Drs. Corsi (sp?) and Melcer, was developed to estimate some of these releases, including that of H2S.

Best of luck,
