K2 & K3 LINES

Hello,

I am trying to input 36 node hydrographs using PCSWMM. Only 24 K2 entries will fit per line, so I begin a new line with the K2 group identifier. With the TEO column, only 23 K3 entries will fit per line, so I begin a new line without the K3 group identifier. This is copied below. I know that K2 & K3 line wrapping was discussed recently, but those messages were mainly about modifying the current entry method, and by reviewing these messages, I could not get a good concept of the correct way it is currently done. If someone could take the time to explain how the file should look, or post an example I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Erin Moore

Re: K2 & K3 LINES

Hi Erin

EXTRAN itself will allow more than 36 ( I think Wayne Huber set it up for 400 nodes) nodes on a K3 line. However, it may be difficult to find an editor that will permit you to create an ASCII file this wide. When I had that problem I could not find a satisfactory editor. EXCEL worked for me in the end by tightening up the column widths as much as possible . EXCEL will only print out a text file (prn) about 256 charcters in width. I was able to get 28 nodal data columns, and with my data I think I could get 36 by narrowing the EXCEL columns some more. I recommend you consider doing this if your data will permit, as opposed to winding onto second rows; that is heading for a lot of grief.

It appears your K3 data will permit EXCEL editing of 36 items per row. The K2 data with 6 digit node values will probably not fit on a 256 character line. So You will have to fold the K2 data but you can use EXCEL to format the K3 data. Folding the K2 data only is not so much grief as folding the K3 data. For easy reference on the EXCEL sheet insert an astericked line and just number the nodes on that line 1 to 36. Do this also for the folded K2 line and you'll be able to more easily associate a column with a node number.

Regarding the data, the last 15 or so K3 lines appear to contain more than 36 data points. There should be a couple K3's in that group, I think.

Good luck,
Ron Kilmartin

Re: K2 & K3 LINES

Re a previous discussion of inputing a large number of hydrographs with K3 cards.

This note is for the case of extending the hydrograph columns as far as needed on a single line.

For those who may run into this problem and are counting on EXCEL as an editor for data manipulation, Microsoft has an ancient "gotcha" built into their spatially delimited prn file - 256 characters or thereabouts, depending on your windows font. It will not print (or file) a wider line with this option.

You can cut the K3 and Time columns but you may be limited on cutting the data columns much below the standard 8.4 characters, depending on the number of digits you need in your data.
