Looking for models and vendors

Hello all!

The United States EPA is developing an environmental technology verification (ETV) program, which will create a system for third-party verification and reporting of environmental technology performance. The evaluations produced by the ETV program will provide an independent and credible assessment of commercially-available technology for potential purchasers. There are a number of ETV pilot projects underway, including one that is looking at wet weather flow (WWF) technologies.

Modeling of wet weather flows is one segment of the WWF ETV project. As a part this effort, I am developing a comprehensive list of WWF models (specifically runoff, collection system and treatment, and receiving water) and vendors. Eventually the capabilities of these models will be used as the basis for developing appropriate protocols for the verification process. I am looking to all of you to ensure that the list of models and vendors is as complete as possible. I appreciate any leads that you can provide.

One of the objectives of the WWF ETV protocol development will be to provide some formal assurance to model-users that the models do indeed act as represented. Hence, it is both important and beneficial for all of you, as modelers and/or vendors, to make sure that the commercial models that you currently use/distribute are included in the ETV process.

We have identified some protocols, such as that used by FEMA, for evaluating urban runoff models. If you know of other existing protocols that have been used in North America or elsewhere for verifying models available for characterizing URBAN RUNOFF, COLLECTION SYSTEMS and TREATMENT PLANTS, and RECEIVING WATERS, I would be interested in hearing from you.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

The periodical "Civil Engineering News" publishes an annual update of hydrology and hydraulics software. You may want to start with their May '98 review, but beware - it is based on vendor reponses to questionnaires. That is, it probably has not been independently reviewed, has some major omissions (CHI and DHI for example), and may contain "vaporware".

Associated Engineering has developed an inflow/infliltration model for sanitary sewer systems in Edmonton. It encorporated the state of the art in 1994 and the experience in the Edmonton area and was calibrated for several events. It is based on HYMO and has an interface to EXTRAN
