Modeling of of a Mixed Pressure Pipe and Open Channel System

Dear List Members:

How would you model a large diameter cross country water transmission line which has both pressure and free flow (open channel) conditions?

The 2-6 meter pipeline starts from a reservoir and extends about 450 km to supply water to several cities. The water conveyance system includes a penstock outlet, pressurized tunnels, free flow tunnels, aqueducts, buried pressurized pipe, surface & subsurface pump stations, reservoirs, bifurcation gates, radial gates, discharge regulation valves, culverts, etc.

Typically a water system is modeled using a water distribution system network model like EPANET or Cybernet. However, water models cannot model open channel flow (right?)

SWMM EXTRAN can model both the pressure and open channel flow (right?). Can we use EXTRAN for modeling a water system by inputting demands as negative flows? Has anyone done that?

Or, do you really need to use both a water and a sewer model to simulate different segments of the water conveyance system (i.e. use EPANET to model pressure portion and use EXTRAN to model open channel portion)?

I will appreciate your ideas on modeling this system.
Thanks
Best regards,
