Long data output analysis

Dear All:

I know I asked you before about a way to read output data from HMS and I was suggested to edit the results and copy and paste them. It works fine but when I analyse several years of simulation on an hourly basis time step the results can be over 250,000 and it takes long time holding the mosue button click to select most of them. I also copy and paste for different time periods but nevertheless it takes long to do it.

Is there any way of saving these results in a file (DSS, TXT, etc)? Can I generate a report from HMS showig the record of simulated discharges? Is there a file where HMS saves temporal data where these flows are stored? thanks a lot for your help.

I do not think that HMS is just to show data on screen or work with temporal results I think it should store the information somewhere.

Re: Long data output analysis

Bill,

HMS stores most of its data (input and output) in the project DSS file. You should be able to use the HEC-DSS programs (DSPLAY, DSSUTL, REPGEN, etc.) to generate graphs and reports. REPGEN is the report generator. I have not used it in years and am not sure what kind of reports from the HMS data you would be able to generate. It was primarily used to generate canned reports from real-time water control operations. DSPLAY will work well for displaying time series data from the model. You can use DSSUTL to tabulate data into an ASCII file that you can import into another program such as EXCEL or WORD.

They are available on the HEC web-site for download. The manuals are also available. The programs are quite dated and are DOS based. I have not had any problem using them in a DOS window in NT or 2000. I have not tried XP. The drivers for DSPLAY are even more dated since the company that developed them has been out of business for years.

You can also use the DSS button in HEC-RAS to view DSS time series data.

Re: Long data output analysis

Hello Bill;

John has shown the way to go.

I'd like to add that there's an easy-to-use windows-based utility called HEC-DSSVue which can read the DSS file created by HMS (or else) and which lets you tabulate or make a graph of any or all the input & output series stored in that file ; you can also use copy-paste to get the tabular data displayed into Excel if you like. Free-of-charge it was when I downloaded it some months ago.

Another option is to 'print' your simulation results (the Summary Table,Time Series Table or Graph) to a PostScript Printer File. The postscript file (*.ps) is converted to a *.pdf file which could be easier to manage than holding down the mouse button for a while.

Re: Long data output analysis

Try the following links, Bill ; you would need all of them.

ftp://fraser.earthsci.do.usbr.gov/pu...ssVueSetup.exe

ftp://fraser.earthsci.do.usbr.gov/pu...HecDssJars.tar

ftp://fraser.earthsci.do.usbr.gov/pu...ecDssPCLib.tar

Hope they all work (see also the attached page).

Good Luck.
