Re: HEC-HMS Background Image

Hi,

I'm not sure if I can ask this question, but I think HMS only supports georeferenced files (with X,Y coordinates).

Your bmp file is about some DEM? This is what your quetion is about? Is a raster model?

If so you can convert it into a shapefile and then upload it as a background image.

Give us some details and will see if I can help you out.

Rodrigo.

Re: HEC-HMS Background Image

Ok,

You'll need a GIS tool to do so. To convert to a shapefile. But, if your file has no coordinates, you may want to use a CAD tool to import your BMP file to a format HEC-HMS can read.

Really - it cannot be done. If you look at the options of what can be used (add map, browse, see drop-down on file types), it doesn't do images except .img, which is a proprietary format (Imagine software?) that I have been unable to successfully convert any image to using any software and see it in HMS - and I have a lot of software, including ArcGIS. Converting to a .img format does not work. You cannot see anything after the import.

You do not need georeferencing necessarily.

Google around for a freeware that may convert to MrSID format. I believe the newest version will take that sort of image.

Other than that, try a .dxf file, but that is only linework, not raster. Shapefile won't give you the image either.

Believe me, been 'round and 'round with wanting a background image. More trouble than it is worth.

Thank in advance

SHP files

If you copy all files with the same tile name with different extend (e.g. river136.SHP, river136.SHX, river136. ....), HEC-HMS is upload as back ground figure without problem.
Try it
Hope this is somehow helpful.

image files are easy

An image file is simply a jpeg and a text file that contains the coordinates of the four corners. Attached is an example image text file (the file extension should be *.img). You should keep both the jpeg and *.img files in the same directory (map folder in the HMS project directory is best). The first four lines in the text file contain the coordinates. The last line is the name of the jpeg.

you dont have to bother...you can add shape files as background images in HEC-HMs...just go to view>background maps>add.. and locate the required shape file...
u can also manage the colors and line styles etc from draw properties menu...
