What is 1D and 2D modelling

Can u please explain me the differance between ID and 2D hydroulic modelling. If any one can give me a referance material I would be appriciated.

Re: What is 1D and 2D modelling

2D modeling considers flows in the lateral direction.
1D just considers flows in the direction the river or stream is going.

Dear Sir or Madam,

There is a great explaination for 1D modeling within the HECRAS Hydraulic Reference manual. I would start your research there. 1D in its simplest terms basically means you have either a forward or reverse push but only in the major direction of the flow of water whereas 2D models not only show these same forces but also model lateral forces within a river going side to
side.

Re: What is 1D and 2D modelling

In 1D modelling, all hydraulic parameters relevant to a cross-section of a river(or canal) is attributed to a point in the model. Thus it is useful and generally sufficient for general flood routing, discharge and water level estimation in not-so- complex setup. Even lateral flows and reflows could be modelled to a reasonable accuracy.
In 2-D , topography as per contours is better depicted but processing load becomes much higher. Flow parameters are averaged over depth and to that extent approximation is there which may work against getting desired results in understanding dispersion characteristics in a case study as applicable in water quality studies.
