Cross sections - import of survey data

I'm looking for the best solution to define the format of the survey data for the guys who are going out in the field to survey the cross sections (they're gonna measure coordinates and estimate Manning's n values).
The best solution for them would be to fill out an excel-sheet which I would convert in a text file before the import...
Any suggestions?
