reach-storage area connection

I am trying to model a scenario where a reach drains into a storage area. I would like the two to overlap-- the reach should not end right at the boundary of the storage area so that the additional cross sections that I enter within the storage area will help with the routing. According to the HEC-RAS manual, a black dot at the end of a reach indicates that a connection between a reach and a SA has been made. I cannot seem to get the black dot at the end of my reach, however, and when I use "move objects" in the geometry editor to move the end of my reach further into the SA, the reach automatically shortens to the boundaries of the SA.

I know that what I am trying to do is possible because I just did it yesterday-- but the connection was automatically made and I don't know what I am doing differently today.....

Thanks!
