Inline storage

Good Day.

I am attempting to model a river system that has a series of weir-controled storage areas, connected by reaches of river, with bridges and culverts crossing the river reaches. I have E-V curves for the storage areas, as well as the weir heights, etc.

I cannot find in the documentation how to handle inline storage, although searching this forum yielded one thread that would suggest I require two cross-sections upstream of the outlet control structure (weirs) in my storage. The documentation states that inline storage can only be at the start or end of a reach .... does this mean my storage must be in a reach (at the start), along with an inline structure and two cross-sections upstream?

I am a bit perplexed .... all help is appreciated.

I typically handle this situation by cutting cross sections through the storage area and then use an inline structure to create the storage area. You will probably have to "fake" the cross sections in the storage areas to achieve the desired elevation-capacity relationship unless you have this information. I should mention that I don't actually use the "storage areas" that are available in the model, but rather create an area that will store water behind the weir using cross sections.

You can use large cross sections to model your storage areas as the poster above says.

Or you can use storage areas. If you use storage areas, you must have a seperate reach between them.

So say you have a long reach with two storage areas/inline structures.

You would have a reach (say reach A) before the first storage area. Reach B between the two storage areas. And Reach C below the third storage area.

The downstream end of Reach A would be connected to the first storage area. The upstream end of Reach B would also be connected to the first storage area. The downstream end of REach B would connect to the second storage area. The upstream end of Reach C would connect to the third storage area.

Yes, you need two normal cross sections between the inline structure (dam) and the storage area. These should be large, dam sized cross sections. You should also have at least two cross sections below the inline structure before it goes into the next storage area.

After you have created the storage area on the geometric editor, you can drag the end of a reach (using the move object pointer) into the storage area to connect it.
