Hec-Ras Unstaedy flow simulation error

Dear forum,

I want to do an inundation mapping of a dam break. I could work out all geometry data, unsteady flow data and plan data. For the boundary conditions I used flow hydrographs respectively. I simplified the project due to the error I'm always getting. So I have got only 72 XS, a main channel and a tributary.

The error is that my simulation time window is not correct though, I compared my data with the example projects provided by Hec-Ras but did not find any differences. Flow hydrograph step width is half an hour, for the simulation output I choosed one hour.

Has anybody an idea to solve that problem. I would appreciate for every help. Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to run RAS in a non-English environment?

If Microsoft Windows is set to anything beside "English" RAS sometimes has problems.

No, the windows operating system is completely held in English.

I am thinking about problems due to the DEM resolution (here 30m) where the geometry was extracted. However, it does not relate to the simulation time error.

Post a picture of the simulation time window.

Re: Hec-Ras Unstaedy flow simulation error

Dear jarvus

here is the simultation time window which is included in the unsteady flow data window.

I already tried other time configurations (e.g. 09/10/2005 0600 - 11/10/2005 0730). I tried to increase the no. of ordinates upto 120 and changed the ending time in the unsteay flow data window naturally.

However, I still claim the error has an other reason.

Thanks a lot for your help so far.

OKT is not the correct abbreviation for October. Try OCT.

There might be other problems going on also, but you can at least start with that.

Re: Hec-Ras Unstaedy flow simulation error

Dear jarvus

I changed it to 'OCT' and got the attached error message. Even the the time and date disappeared in the unsteady flow data window.

By the way, OKT is the appreviation which appears automatically after I typed the date in the format 09/10/2005 as suggested in the input requirements.

You've been probably right with your first answer, that there might be an issue with non English environments. I will ask my system admins.

Hi ntrommler

I've never had problems with unsteady flow calculations in my german windows environment. Really strange your problems.....
Have you ever tried to change your month, JAN for example?
