River becomes underground

Before start exploring the program I'd like to know from experienced users if HEC-RAS can help me in this case.

Is it possible to uso HEC-RAS to model a river that becomes underground under a village? If yes, how is it done and how to calculate the amount of water that flows over the streets?

And is it possible to introduce the tributary flow arriving from pluvial drainage pipes?

You can use "cross sections with lids" to model underground flow. Tributary flow can be brought in with junctions and/or lateral structures with culverts.

If your street flow is behaving like a channel, RAS could model that. However, if the street flow is shallow "sheet" flow, RAS can not handle that. If the street flow is two dimensional then RAS will not be able to do that either. However, a series of storage areas can sometimes be used instead.

I have seen RAS models that involve complex urban environments. For instance, RAS was used to model the New Orleans flood from hurricane Katrina. This involved street flooding and massive underground tunnels with storm drains and pumps.

However, these problems tend to be difficult and require an experienced user to keep the model stable and produce good results.

The street behaves like a channel when the subterranean channel can't afford all the flow of rainfall.

That tip on hurricane Katrina was helpful. I found some reports produced by IPET ( https://ipet.wes.army.mil/), where they explain the use of HEC-RAS.

I'll explore it a little further. Thanks!

I have the same doubt you had, I am modelling a very problematic stream that goes underground for 800 meters, I think this thread will help me. May be we can stay in contact and exchange experience.

Hi ras_user,
That could be a good idea.
My river goes under an urban area and connects with other smaller streams while subterraneous. I'm not previewing an easy task on this modelation...
Perhaps we could use our personal email to share advances and dificulties.
