Re: UNET & NT

Greetings:

There are two answers to this problem:

The simple answer:
Use HEC-RAS 2.2 to view and print your DSS data. The graphing functions and cut-and-paste ability of this program are usually sufficient for most UNET simulations. It's a lot easier to use as well.

The complicated answer:
Reinstall DSS (3 disks) and the device drivers (2 disks), keeping the default directories as suggested. Reboot your machine afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Mike

UNET & NT

We are trying to install the UNET program with Windows NT and have not been successful. The UNET program runs ok but the graphical display does not work. The following error message appears when we try to examine the output in DSS:

Error in Load CGI -3003
Cannot open workstation -error -3003
Stop-program terminated

GSS Device Driver Management Utility
© Copyright 1985-1990 Graphic Software Systems, Inc. Version 2.20 All rights reserved
TSR GSS*CGI is not loaded - no action taken.

Has anyone had this problem and know what the solution is?

Thanks in advance.

Re: UNET & NT

HEC-RAS 2.2 is indeed a very nice windows interface for VIEWING HEC- DSS tables and plots. However, it does not provide the capability to create HEC-DSS tables or edit existing tables. A utility program called VISTA is available from the California DWR at

It seems to do the trick. However, I have not yet had the time to fully test it.

Re: UNET & NT

The HEC-DSS package was written several years ago to provide two basic types of functions:

1) text-based (command line) data entry and editing capabilities for time series
and other data files stored in HEC-DSS
2) plotting of HEC-DSS data through a series of device drivers licensed from GSS (Graphics Software Systems??)

The GSS device drivers are old; they do not support most modern graphics adapters and output devices, and are not supported by most modern (i.e., NT and 2000) operating systems. I would suggest that you forget GSS and just use the text-based portion of the package. Or, on the other hand, you may have just found the perfect use for that old 80286 computer that's up in the attic.
