GentlemenLadiesTo whomever
This is the first time that I have belonged to any email group, chat room, express, etc., so please bear with me for I know nothing of any protocol. I have been a user of HEC-2 and HEC-RAS since the beginning of the Corps releases to the public, and never had any serious problems until 3 of them occurred in the last month.
The switch to ver. 1.1 of HEC-RAS from HEC-2 in 1995 was smooth and uneventful. I converted all my old HEC-2 files to HEC-RAS and then completely dumped all the old HEC-2 program and files. I updated to ver.2, ver2.2, and then new SNET for 2.2 in March 2000. The next month all he.. hit the fan. (heck i.e.)
Problem 1:
Trying to place 2 ft of debris on the top ¼ height of a double box culvert took 5 years of my life due to the stress it produced. I finally recalled a similar problem that I had successfully done about a year ago. (ver.2.2, orig SNET), and modeled the new project the same way. Well it did not work. Or would the old project work with the new SNET. I did not try and run the new project with the orig SNET, because I had run out of patience and could not figure out how to replace the new SNET with the orig SNET. I was able to get the project to run by modeling the box as a channel with a top lid. The old project that worked was to place 2 sections, a foot apart at the entrance of the double box, with the top lid modeled to meet the pier nose. (The middle wall of the culvert is extended at a 2:1 slope to the invert of the upstream channel.) The culvert is placed 0.1 ft. below the bounding upstream section which is modeled in the dimensions of the box, including the middle wall and then a top lid is placed. This bounding section is one of the two section placed just up stream of the entrance. The culvert is under dnstrm control and runs open channel or pressure flow depending of the Q used. Normally the Q10, 25, 50 and 100 are profiled. The plan computes through the last downstream section below the culvert, then "Culvert" pops up on the next line and then the whole calculating process stops. End of game.
Problem 2:
I have never run more than 18 profiles until last month. The new versions of HEC-RAS are supposed to run up to 100. Well it did, .......but when I went back to the two projects, one had a run of 18 profiles plus another run of 51 profiles and the other was a single run of 69 profiles, the flow data would not load. One of those teeth grinding messages appeared and when the flow table was opened the 18 profile one was OK, but the 51 profiles, although there was 51 profile slots showing, all the data was missing. As was the boundary data. The 69 profile project was the same way. 69 profiles, no data! Where's the nearest sledge hammer.
Problem 3:
The last for the best. Since retirement, I have been working at my old office for ½ day once a week on various HEC-RAS projects. A month ago I tried to convert an old HEC-2 file from our archives to HEC-RAS. No luck. The archives are formatted in Zenix (Unix) sp.?, which can be converted to the correct format by opening the file in Wordpad. Still no luck. I thought it might be because you can only save the file in a .txt format which means it will open in Notepad which does not carry the carriage returns, so I took the whole darn thing home with a floppy of a correctly formatted HEC-2 input file. After fiddling around with the Notepad, Wordpad business for several days with no luck, I input the correctly formatted HEC-2 file, and guess what. It would not transfer. So after downloading the HEC-2 program from HEC at Davis, and making sure the HEC-2 file would run, which it did just fine, no free form inputs anywhere is this story, I started reloading all my old HEC-RAS versions. As I expected, only the first version, 1.1 would convert the HEC-2 file, which it did with nary a cryptic message. I can't believe this problem could go unnoticed by the Corps, so expect that I am just having a bad hair day. Am I screwing up somewhere? Is there a button unpushed someplace? Help!
Actually now that I know ver. 1.1 will covert HEC-2 channel section files, my day is made, for the problem of having to input 68 sections manually can be overcame by taking ver.1.1 to work, converting the HEC-2 file to 1.1, then converting 1.1 to 2.2, new SNET. However, this seems a long way around a small circle, so would appreciate any help out there. The first 2 problems are also easy to circumvent, but would appreciate knowing any mistakes I think I must be making in the inputs.
Thanks,
Richard Zieber
