DEM formats

Chris,

My name is Laura Poulos. I am a GIS technician with Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout, Inc. in Toledo, Ohio. We are currently working on a project that requires the analysis of Digital Elevation models within the BOSS RMS for AutoCAD 2000 software. Previously, Chris Hauser has been in contact with you regarding file formats for DEMs.

The BOSS software manual states that the software will support an ESRI ASCII Grid file format. I am confused regarding this format. ESRI software supports several grid formats. I have exported the DEM that we acquired from the USGS National Elevation Dataset(NED) from ESRI's ArcGIS software in every format available and all receive the save error upon opening in the BOSS software ("This is not a valid ESRI ASCII grid file."). I also exported the DEM in ASCII grid format using ERDAS Imagine 8.5 and got the same error.

Currently, when I go to open the GRID in ArcGIS, the grid name (Portage in this case) appears with the grid symbol next to it. I simply click to open. When attempting to open the same grid with BOSS RMS we see a file folder named Portage with several files in it with the extension .adf (the file appears as it does when viewing it through MS Explorer). Any ideas as to the format here?

Could you please advise me regarding the details of this grid format. We must resolve this issue as soon as possible for a project that is near deadline.

Thanks for your time,
Laura Poulos

Re: DEM formats

Dear Laura :

Note that we provide a sample ESRI ArcInfo ASCII grid file with RMS / RiverCAD. Look for the file called ARCINFO.DEM, contained in our Examples directory. This should assist you in coming up with the correct format for importing into RMS and RiverCAD.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.

Sincerely,

Chris E. Maeder, M.S.
