Importing DEM data

Chris

I have found lots of information about this subject, but I am still having problems. For the project I am working on, I need the elevation data for imported DEM's to be in feet. I can't seem to get this to happen correctly though. I have tried working with various different types of DEM's, including SDTS formats. The SDTS's had the correct units for elevation, but they needed to be re-projected, and somewhere in that process the elevations revert back to meters. Is there a way to simply scale the elevation's by ~3.281 and leave the X and Y coordinates alone? I have even tried using Autocad by contouring the DEM and saving it as a .dwg, then open it in Autocad and proceed to save it is a block and insert the block as a part in Rivercad. I thought this might work since block inserts allow different scale factors for all 3 coordinates. For some reason, this didn't work at all, and actually even gave me lots of negative elevations. The only other thing that I haven't tried out completely is using ARC/GIS 8 to convert from meters to feet. If this is possible, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me what is necessary, (Spatial Analyst?) and possibly how exactly to go about doing it.

Thanks.

Re: Importing DEM data

Dear Kyle :

Sounds like you are having difficulty with the 3 different coordinate systems. If you have access to ArcGIS, then use that. We can import an ESRI ASCII Grid file, and with ArcGIS you will be able to get everything spatially correct.
