floodplain mapping

Chris -

This morning I was working on mapping the floodplain for one of our streams and I have a question. What is the purpose of the floodplain mapping module when you can map your floodplain through the HEC-RAS module? At first I began to use the floodplain module, but got hung up. What kind of floodplain data file is it looking for when you import? I thought that you could just pull in your HEC-RAS data, but that wasn't the case. So, I began looking elsewhere and that is when I found the floodplain feature in the HEC-RAS module.

Re: floodplain mapping

Dear Kim :

Note that the Floodplain Mapping Module allows you to bring in externally generated water surface elevations (such as from SWMM) and plot the flooding extents from that.

However, if you are doing everything in HEC-RAS (or HEC-2), then there is no need to use the Floodplain Mapping Module since this is already built into the RiverCAD / RMS interface.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.

Sincerely,
