Long file names

Chris:

I have spoken to you a couple times over the past two days about our HEC II module within River CAD 2000 not being able to open the HEC 2 input files. The program can generate the data with no errors but when it comes to analyzing the data I get the error message that it is not able to open the input files.

This is getting very frustrating since I had no problem generating the info on the 30 day demo version but now that we bought the program, it won't work. The River Cad 2000 is also the 2nd version we have purchased from BOSS. The first version crashed after a couple months of use and BOSS could not replace it as the previous River CAD version was no longer available.

I am going to have Craig McGeachy from our office send you the data file to see if you can actually run it.

I have been in limbo for several months because of the River CAD software problems and I am getting very frustrated.

regards,

Re: Long file names

Dear Doug Clark :

As I described yesterday, HEC-2 is written in FORTRAN, and as such you must use a standard MS-DOS directory path for your data files. You cannot have any spaces in the path names, and the sub-paths cannot be longer than 8 characters. Also, deeply nested paths may not work, either. The HEC-2 program engine will not run in these situations.

The name of your drawing file is 10 characters long (SPENCER0-2.FLX) and so HEC-2 creates an output file that is truncated to 8 characters (SPENCE~1.OUT). I shortened the drawing file name to 8 characters and re-ran the analysis. RiverCAD could find the output file since it was the same name as the drawing file with the file extension OUT.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.

Sincerely,

Chris E. Maeder, M.S.
