Data import format

To whom it may concern,

This afternoon I spoke to Nathan Gehring about the RiverCAD program. I had some
concerns about importing data. Well I am having trouble doing that. I have tried
numerous ways to import an ASCII text file of survey points; however, a message
stating "invalid header format" keeps popping up. I have tried to modify the header,
but the same problem keeps happening.

Thank-you,
Sarah Pickering

Re: Data import format

Dear Sarah Pickering :

Note that your ASCII data file must be in the correct format, otherwise RMS / RiverCAD will not import it. Note that these file formats are described in the RMS and RiverCAD User Manuals in Chapter 3. There is a large description on these file formats. Note that you can download these User Manuals as PDF files from our download areas.

If you cannot make this work, perhaps you can email me your data file so I can check it to see what is wrong with the file.

If you have any additional questions or need any further information, please contact me again.

Sincerely,

Re: Data import format

I was having the same problem with the file import format. I was following directions on page 3-51 with no luck. However, there is an XYZexample file. I note that the example file has two extra lines with the units given. It appears that there is an error in the User Manual.

I just made a copy of the example file and cut and paste my data in it and the import routine works just fine. the User Manual should be corrected.

Re: Data import format

Dear Garth:

The User Manual in Chapter 3 is correct for what it refers to. The commmand does work with the file format it references (at least it did the last time I tried it :).

However, the example file ("XYZtest.txt") you are referring to is a "new format" that allows the user to import more than 1 cross-section in at a time. This newer format is not yet documented in the user manual.

This new format was implemented when a client requested this ability. This type of file is imported by selecting :
Reach | Import | Import Coordinate File.

The file format is :

XYZ (or, whatever order the data columns are in, i.e., ZXY)
IMPERIAL (or METRIC, defines the XY coordinate units)
IMPERIAL (or METRIC, defines the elevation coordinate units)
1000 (number or blank, defines starting leftmost station)
0 (number or blank, defines the elevation offset)
XS 2000 (defines start of cross-section data, and section ID)
X coordinate, Y coordinate, Z coordinate data (commas optional)
:
:
X coordinate, Y coordinate, Z coordinate data
(blank line, defines start of next cross-section)
XS 2200 (defines start of cross-section data, and section ID)
X coordinate, Y coordinate, Z coordinate
:
:
X coordinate, Y coordinate, Z coordinate
(and so on...)
