RiverCAD is a powerful software—and is user friendly. It saves me a lot of time in automating the generation of cross sections and in performing floodplain delineations. I like how it can rescale and rearrange the cross sections and profile plots very easily. What is great is that it links HEC-RAS with AutoCAD, and once you have created your cross sections, you can run the HEC-RAS analysis and then have it automatically generate the floodplain map—and the AutoCAD drawing is completed—ready to go! RiverCAP was great for my large land development projects where floodplain mapping was involved.
I use it to create my base hydraulic file and export/import into/out of HEC-RAS for 3 reasons. The first is RiverCAD creates a river network that is to the scale of the project when I don't know how to make it as detailed when just using HEC-RAS from the start. The second reason I like using RiverCAD is it defines floodplain limits with a realistic graphic in an instant. This gives the client and municipalities a better perception of the river system along with other hydraulic calculations that are optionally shown like water elevations. This makes exhibits in my drainage reports look professional along with the supporting calculations. The third reason is municipalities require HEC-RAS files and RiverCAD will produce in an instant.
I am still in the green with RiverCAD and haven't fully released it's capability, but it has produced results I needed during situations when deadlines are a major factor in drainage designs. So perhaps quality and speed are what's best that the novice RiverCAD user will experience.
Oh yeah, the free tech support for RiverCAD is the best I've experienced for any software.

RiverCAD has significantly reduced the time taken to do floodlines, both on small, single river systems and on large, multiple river systems. With good survey data, the software is easy to use and cross sections are simple to take off. The automatic drawing of floodlines onto electronic survey data is a massive time saver. O’Shea Leader Consulting Engineers Limited is a multi-disciplined consultancy working in the Irish civil and building industry. While we do not tender for major infrastructural development we have a thriving business providing services to the residential and industrial markets for all sizes of developments. The past number of years within the state has seen an overhaul and generally a betterment of the Irish construction industry towards sustainable development; in the context of RiverCAD this includes assessing impacts and formulating mediating measures against the impacts on rivers and catchments. The effects of development on an existing watercourse are now routinely requested as part of requests for further information during development planning.
Initially when considering river modeling software I was surprised to discover that there is no continuous maintenance charge on RiverCAD; in my experience this is unusual and in all honesty led me to be a bit apprehensive about investing. Once I had reviewed the online demonstration I knew that this software would suite our purposes provided that customer support was adequate. In terms of customer service I can confirm that it is second to none; this is not something that can be said for some of the other companies that supply software to O’Shea Leader and is a major factor when investing in software (and hardware).
Prior to investing in RiverCAD hydraulic analysis work was prepared by hand resulting in an ever increasing burden on resources in an age where clients expect more in a shorter time. Since switching to RiverCAD there is a substantial time saving to O’Shea Leader and furthermore local authorities have more confidence in computer modeling rather than hand calculations. In effect the invest in RiverCAD has already paid for itself due to the time saved and the quality of the work generated; additionally the software allows for substantially more detailed analysis and modeling of multiple scenarios in a shorter period increasing the level of service that can now be offered to our clients.
While Irish engineers cannot yet make full use of all the time saving benefits of the system; many of the ground modeling data import options are not available to us yet, O’Shea Leader Consulting Engineers have been able to modify our in-house surveying practice to benefit from the time saving applications of RiverCAD.
As the software is fully integrated with the industry standard AutoCAD drafting package is a major boon to users of RiverCAD. Allowing for the fact that at the time of purchasing there are differences between the user interface and user manual there is a relatively short learning curve in becoming proficient with the software. Report generation and integration of results into engineering documents and drawing is also made reasonably simple.
In conclusion O’Shea Leader’s investment in the RiverCAD software has proved to be a successful one. Project assessment time has decreased dramatically while the quality of the output information and the numerous options that can be modeled for a development has increased. In operational terms O’Shea Leader Consulting Engineers now have a distinct advantage over our competition and while I cannot recommend the software to other Irish Consultants, I can recommend it to engineering professionals outside of Ireland. In hindsight I should have recommended investment in RiverCAD years ago and have since invested in BOSS International StormNET.

I have been using RiverCAD XP on several recent flood inundation projects. The software has been very cost effective to create HEC-RAS geometry files for analyzing dam breach scenarios. What originally took us days to cut the river cross sections, now only takes a few hours. In addition, we can also quickly create the maximum water surface flood limits within the study areas. Our flood inundation studies range from 3 to 15 miles, depending on the lake's characteristics. Finally, I appreciate BOSS's lifetime of free technical support for RiverCAD XP software. Free support is a rarity these days.

I have been using RiverCAD for 4 or 5 months and I must say, I am impressed. I received the new "XP" version and the enhancements over the previous version are many. I can tell because I do not have the XP version of the User's Manual, yet, and the difference between old and new is obvious.
I have been using AutoCAD, DTM, and HEC packages for land and stream channel management since 1990. After running through the first couple tutorial examples, I was able to start using RiverCAD right away. I spent less than a day learning my way around. The integration of CAD, DTM, and HEC within one interface is the way I have always wanted it.
The technical support team have been very helpful and responsive. As I said, I didn't need much help getting going but I did find a "bug". Chris and his team responded immediately and a patch was available within a couple days. Great service.
In another tech support instance Chris, again, in response to our need for importing LiDAR (.las) formatted data recommended Global Mapper as a file translator. Thanks Chris! It is indeed a terrific add-on to RiverCAD and, its only $250.00. Native .las support in RiverCAD would be nice but GM has some other great stuff too.
RiverCAD was not inexpensive but, I guess, you get what you pay for.

Just wanted to thank you for your BOSS International software. I personally bought the RiverCAD XP, Floodplain Mapping, and DTM Interface Module in December of 2007.
This was my first project using HEC-RAS and it involved the largest river in the valley. I obtained some HEC-RAS data from two other engineering companies and melded two projects together by adjusting datum and by adding junctions and additional cross sections.
The project, a stockpile plan that is in a floodplain, was approved the first time through by the City's plan checker and the site is currently being graded. Our client and my boss were impressed and I was reimbursed immediately for the purchase.

The modeler can change design storm with a simple click of the mouse, this saves hours of hand computations. FTN Associates Ltd. gives RiverCAD (formerly BOSS HEC-2 for AutoCAD) an enthusiastic "two thumbs up." We find it to be a valuable tool for creating all types of models— not just HEC-2. In addition to using it for developing HEC-2 models, we use it in developing other models that can utilize HEC-2 type input files to represent riverine, reservoir, and estuary geometry. Our clients for these studies have included the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Corps of Engineers Districts, municipalities, developers, industries, and other consultants.
RiverCAD significantly reduces our time in developing an HEC-2 input file and interpreting its output. Its ability to graphically merge cross section data from two data sources (e.g., topo map and detailed surveys) is one of the features our engineers love. The documentation is thorough and adds a lot more explanation than the Corp's user manual on most topics—great for training new users. When digital contour data is available you get the added benefit of minimizing human error (and lots of time) in picking cross section points from a contour map. RiverCAD automated floodplain mapping feature also allows us to easily meet FEMA's requirement that all floodplain maps be submitted in digital format.
BOSS International's technical support is also something we appreciate. They know the product and we've never waited for more than fifteen minutes for a return call. We even called late one evening after we had just purchased RiverCAD and were surprised that someone answered the phone; it turns out we had called in the middle of the BOSS International Christmas party and they still took the time to answer our question!

RiverCAD eliminates all the "grunt work" normally associated with HEC-2: no more arcane data input codes and formats to remember, because BOSS handles it all. Results are interpreted much more quickly and presented in report quality form, immediately. The software paid for itself, on the first two kilometers of waterway, in reduced input and results interpretation costs.
Documentation is superb. Telephone assistance is always there, no matter how stupid the question. I am very satisfied with its performance.

If it weren't for RiverCAD, this
would have been a big problem...
As civil engineering consultants specializing in hydraulics, hydrology, and sedimentation, we are faced with challenging and unique problems all the time. A recent project falling into the category of "challenging and unique" was an FEMA floodplain study that changed in scope halfway through the study after we learned that high flows were leaving the system as split flow. The client initially requested the study to be modeled in HEC-RAS, which at the time did not support split flow. HEC-2 supports split flow, but how can HEC-RAS be converted to HEC-2? If it weren't for RiverCAD, this would have been a big problem. Fortunately, I had been using RiverCAD from the start of the project. Using the provided digital topography, it was easy to use RiverCAD to cut over 60 cross sections. Preferring to work in HEC-RAS, I was able to export this geometry to HEC-RAS and proceed with my modeling. When it came time to consider the flow reduction from split flow, I imported my HEC-RAS model back into RiverCAD, then I exported it again to HEC-2. Simple as that!
In general we have been very pleased with BOSS products over the years, and found the technical support to be very responsive to our questions. If you are serious about being on the topo-cutting edge, RiverCAD is the way to go!
