    File Date: Thu May 13 12:55:45 2004

Both the vertically-integrated (ADCIRC-2DDI) and the fully three-dimensional (ADCIRC-3D) versions of ADCIRC solve a vertically-integrated continuity equation for water surface elevation. To avoid the spurious oscillations that are associated with a primitive Galerkin finite element formulation of this equation, ADCIRC utilizes the Generalized Wave Continuity Equation (GWCE) formulation. Development of the weak weighted residual form of the GWCE used in ADCIRC is briefly summarized below.

CGWAVE is a general purpose, state-of-the-art wave prediction model. It is applicable to estimation of wave fields in harbors, open coastal regions, coastal inlets, around islands, and around fixed or floating structures. While CGWAVE simulates the combined effects of wave refraction-diffraction included in the basic mild- slope equation, it also includes the effects of wave dissipation by friction, breaking, nonlinear amplitude dispersion, and harbor entrance losses. The classical super-element method as well as a new parabolic approximation method developed recently, are used to treat the open boundary condition. An iterative procedure introduced by Panchang et al and modifications suggested by Li are used to solve the discretized equations, thus enabling the modeler to deal with large domain problems.
